You Can’t Have Faith Without Love

The Bible tells us that faith is confidence and assurance in those things that we are unable to see.  We are cannot see God, or directly communicate with Him, but quite a few of us have faith in his existence.  Christian believers have confidence in and acknowledge salvation from death through Jesus Christ.  It is understood that all people are condemned to die as a consequence of our sin, and that Jesus died on the Cross as payment for our sins.  A believers faith in the death and resurrection of Christ is believed to be all that is necessary to receive the reward of eternal life.  In fact, the Bible has a long list of familiar names that lived their life with total faith in God and as a result accomplished great things.  The implication is that it was faith that gave these people the power to overcome overpowering odds.  The Bible plainly makes the point that there is power in faith – precisely faith in God.

What is faith according to the Bible?  In addition to the knowledge that faith is confidence in the unknown, the Bible might also imply that faith is a outcome of love.  When we trust in God to hear our prayers and take care of us, we believe this will come about because of the great love He has for us.  If we honestly believe God is the ultimate loving Father with no end to His love, how can we not love Him in return?  It is that potent love reflecting back and forth between us that stimulates our faith.  In fact, the Bible tells us that God is love, and since that is the case, how could our faith be the outcome of anything other than love?

Continuing with this line of reasoning, we can arrive at the conclusion that our faith in God is actually faith in love.  That specific love that comes from God – not the romanticized love of this world – but the pure love of God, is an amazingly highly effective force that feeds and nourishes the power of faith. The only thing we have to do is believe in Jesus and we are granted eternal life.  It is by faith we are saved from death.  By the power of the love of God we are saved from death.  Faith and love working collectively can achieve astounding things.

This power is readily available to us every minute of every day if we truly trust in God and his never-ending love.  The mere act of believing connects us to the supply of faith’s motivating energy which is the overpowering love that God has for all of us. I’m not sure it’s feasible to separate faith and love; just as it is impossible to separate God, the Father, and Jesus Christ.  They are one, and they are connected to every believer via the Holy Spirit which is the spirit of love that produces faith and holds all believers collectively as one.
