Christianity and Salvation

Approximately 75% of Americans identify themselves as being Christian.  Exactly what this means to each person may be something quite unique for many and probably only a small portion of that number would agree fully on the definition of Christianity.  There are quite a few different Christian denominations including some that are not regarded as Christian by other Christians.  There are also quite a few Christians who don’t belong to any denomination at all, attending a non-denominational Christian church or not going to church at all.  Actually, it is believed that only about half of those proclaiming to be Christian attend church and only a fraction of those attend on a regular basis.

This diversity and what seems like confusion is one of the issues that push unbelievers away from Christianity.  It is hard to know how to become a Christian when there are many different points of view and various examples of Christianity to choose from.  Many Christians feel this mixed up view of Christianity is the trickery of the devil plotting against God by purposely confusing the Christian faith.  The Bible makes clear that this fight involving good and evil is going on daily and it may be that the devil is on top in this particular battle.  It would be challenging to demonstrate that the Christian church has altered the world much more than the world has changed the Christian church. In recent years, the Christian church has adapted to the world by adopting a more modern worship model that involves modern forms of music that at one time were strictly forbidden within the boundaries of a Christian church.

Nonetheless, there are some foundational details that are common among all Christians.  Salvation through Jesus Christ is recognized by most, if not all, Christians to be the most essential element of the faith.  What is salvation?  Basically, salvation is the process of being saved from death by proclaiming faith in Jesus.  Christians believe we have been condemned to die as a result of our sinful lives. However, God wants us to live eternally with Him; for that reason, He sent His Son to die in our place, then resurrected Him on the third day to be with Him in Heaven.  Christians believe that they are saved from death by the grace of God through their faith in the death and resurrection of Christ.  Following salvation, the believer is to adhere to the teachings of Jesus – exactly how that is accomplished is what leads to the division in the Christian church.

The Bible is considered to be the Word of God by all Christian believers and this is in all probability the ideal place for anyone to start looking for a deeper understanding.  Because there is so much division and so many varying views on the particulars of how to follow Jesus, it may be a good idea to simply read the book on your own and come to your own conclusions before you look for the help of any human counselor.  If the Bible genuinely is the Word of God as it claims to be, and your heart is in the right place, divine spiritual guidance should make crystal clear the truth about Jesus and God’s plan for our lives.
