A Nice Way To Spend Sunday Afternoon
Between our jobs, school and all the other activities that fill up our lives, we get precious little time to spend with the very people we work so hard for – our children. Even the weekends are filled up. If we’re working parents, we usually spend our Saturdays catching up on essential chores. That leaves us with Sunday.
Many families make a point of making Sunday the family day. A great way to finish Sunday on a high note is to bake a cake. The children always love to join in on the fun and there’s excitement in the air as they anticipate the reward at dessert time. It’s even more fun if you turn it into a game.
Start by letting them choose the shape of the cake you’re going to bake that day. It’s a good bet that the boys will choose your biggest square cake pans.
The girls, however, can be counted on to choose the heart cake pan. In order to avoid some serious conflicts of interest, you will probably have to step in and offer some solutions to the dilemma. You can flip a coin and the winners get their cakepan this week, the losers next week. Or you can see if they can agree on using the round pan.
Wood bar stools are the perfect height for youngsters working in the kitchen. Sit them down and put them to work adding the ingredients and mixing the batter. When they’re done, help them pour it into the cake pan. Put it in the oven and then you can all get started on the icing.
Keep a watchful eye on the kids while they’re making icing. You want there to be some left over for the finished cake! Just to be safe, make a little extra, so they can all have a taste of their creation.
They might not be overjoyed about washing up time, but if you don’t mind them making a little bit of a mess while they’re cleaning, it can be fun, too. You will just need to tidy up a little after them.
Give them a well earned rest while the cake cools. Then let them help you ice it. Some sprinkles on top always add a festive feeling to the cake.
Finally, when time for dessert comes around, the whole family can eat the delicious cake the kids made ‘all by themselves.’ With a little luck, you’ll be able to salvage a couple of slices for their Monday lunch pails. What a great way to finish the weekend!
