Meditation Instruction – Learning from “A New Earth”
If you’ve ever searched for “ meditation instruction ” you know that it can be an overpowering process of figuring how to even move forward . Who knew that soothing the mind could be so stressful?
A book that assisted me remember that taking time out of my day to reconnect with source was Ekhart Tolle’s work “A New Earth”. More than outlining a process for unproblematic meditation, which I’ve included underneath , it highlights the reasons why meditating on our unity rather than isolation are important for creating a better world for all
How can we transform our awareness to create a better world?
I sometimes wonder if we as a society have been “evolving” as a species or just growing, spreading and multiplying like a virus. Watch the mainstream media on any given day it really makes you wonder. You’ll find death , environmental catasrophes , human disaster stories in undending succession.
How did we get here?
Logically, it makes sense that we should be the most evolved group of humans to ever walk the earth, having interpreted /component/page,shop.product_details/category_id,6/flypage,flypage.tpl/product_id,45/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,5/vmcchk,1/”>once daily cialis the soundness and knowledge from previous generations. And sure enough we have made scientific and technological breakthroughs that previous generations would never dreamed of…so then why all the war, pain and suffering?
Actions speak louder than words
I reckon that despite and perhaps because of the exponentially expanding base of knowledge we have in this world our minds have become overloaded, overwhelmed and overheated. With so many things to care about who has time to slow down and reconnect with the “infinite” both inside and outside? So even though we may have the wisdom of the ages at our fingertips, we never really *feel* that we have the time to practice or live them.
Transform your consciousness
For it begins with…a PAUSE, a BREATH, and a feeling of connection. We oftentimes run ourselves so hard and so quickly into the ground (literally!) that we miss the opportunities to enjoy the scraps that make up our lives. The good news is that we can start to transform our consciousness with simple steps.
First, I like to mentally “push” the pause button on the stream of consciousness running though my two ears . Next, I take about 45 seconds to center myself by focusing on my breathing.
I like to use the breathing pattern of:
- breathe in for 3 seconds, hold 1, exhale for 6 seconds
- inhale for 4 seconds, hold 1, exhale for 8 seconds
- breathe in for 5 seconds, hold 1, breathe out for 10 seconds
The benefits that you can get from taking less than 1 minute every 30 minutes in your afternoon are just incredible. Personally, I am more productive, more focused and am happier when I remember and practice this short meditative break consistently throughout the day.
If you spend many hours at a notebook , it can be grueling remember to take these crucial escapes. On my Mac, I use Dejal’s TimeOut program which is currently (at the time of writing) freeware to tell me when to take appropriate breaks and also has the bonus benefit of recommending when you should take a longer 10 minute break.
An alternative is to keep a kitchen timekeeper convenient so that you can be present in the moment of whatever you may be doing and then take your break when the timer goes off. Regardless of what direction you choose, just don’t forget to reconnect with the infinite several times a day and you’ll start to create a new reality in all areas of your life.
